India Met Department has confirmed that the rain-driving well-marked low-pressure area has left the coast of Sri Lanka and has lately located it off the north Tamil Nadu coast (near Chennai).
It has maintained a look out for its intensification as a depression (which is at least two steps below the rank of a cyclone).
Forecast for Chennai said rains may relent for sometime towards the evening before starting afresh, though not heavy, into the night.
The heavier thunderstorms are currently concentrated just to the east of Nellore in Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the heavy rain belt associated with the system has more or less lifted from the south of Tamil Nadu to the north over Chennai, Nellore, Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Kakinada.
Match called off
Thunderclouds have spanned out into adjoining Telangana right until Hyderabad, satellite maps revealed.
Meanwhile, the third day's place of the second cricket test match between India and South Africa in Bengaluru has been called off after sustained rainfall through the morning and beyond lunch.
India Met Department has declared heavy to very rainfall alert over south and north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, north Tamil Nadu, and south interior Karnataka variously over the next couple of days.
High wind alert is valid along and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh for today.
