The 15-year-old girl is in a critical condition after attacked in a village near New Delhi, police said. Officers have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly raping and attempting to burn the girl to death in Tigri village in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Yadram Singh (constable Bisrakh police station) said the man had severe burns on his hands and has been charged with several offences, including rape, attempted murder, assault of a minor and causing grievous injury. The girl is in New Delhi hospital where she is being treated for burns across 95 % of her body. Her parents found her with severe burns, after hearing her screaming shortly before dawn.
In India women and children are considered particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and harassment because of widespread social taboos against speaking about sexual assault. The stigma is enough to keep many from even reporting crimes, while others face police resistance in filing complaints. The attack one of several recent cases of rape and violence against women or children in India further underlines the persistence of such violence despite a public outcry three years ago that led to stronger laws to prevent sexual assault.
