Police declared an "acute terrorist situation" Friday in Munich and shut down traffic and rail service in the southern German city after a gunman went on a shooting rampage at a shopping mall, killing at least nine people, police said.
At least nine people died in the attacks, wounding 16 others before killing himself, Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae said Saturday.
Andrae added that children were among the 16 wounded, with three of whom remain in critical condition.

Andrae said the suspect in Friday's shooting is an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich. Andrae said the shooter's motive was "fully unclear" in a press conference early Saturday morning.
The attacker's body, who reportedly acted alone, was believed to have been found, Andrae said.
Witnesses around the area said on Facebook reported seeing “three different gunmen” near the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall, but the Munich police chief dismissed the report saying the two other suspects were investigated and had “nothing to do with the incident.”
The shooter was initially believed to be on the run, forcing authorities to shut down traffic and rail services in the Bavarian city. Major roads were largely empty as special police teams swarmed the area, and helicopters carrying snipers swept over rooftops.
"Please avoid public places," Munich police said in a statement.
