Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday launched a free-of-cost bus travel scheme for senior citizens.
Jayalalithaa launched the scheme by giving away bus tokens to five senior citizens, two days after she had announced in the state Assembly about the concessional travel. She had also announced that with this, her government had "fulfilled all the promises" made by the AIADMK in its last assembly election manifesto.
In the first phase, the scheme for free travel for senior citizens, aged above 60, would be implemented in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses in Chennai. Under the plan, elderly people may travel in all the MTC buses, barring air-conditioned ones. The beneficiaries would be given ten tokens per month and they would have to give it to the conductors in buses to travel free of cost.
Those willing to avail the scheme should fill in an application form and submit it to transport authorities and get an identity card and tokens for travel. The forms could be obtained from transport corporation depots and transport department website.
The chief minister had said that there was no deadline to submit application forms and these can be presented at the transport corporation bus depots any time. Opposition parties have termed the free travel sop "inadequate" and sought unlimited travel free of cost for the senior citizens.
