The National Human Rights Commission declared that only three of Odisha's 568 hospitals have fire safety clearance, issued a notice to the BJD Government over the fire incident happened at a hospital in Bhubaneswar which caused death of 21 people dead and more than 100 people were injured in the blaze that broke out at SUM Hospital and Medical College on Monday evening.  The Commission has observed that uncaring attitude and lapses of the authorities if any, violation of right to life of the patients, and expressed a shock how the state authorities 'allowed' such a large number of hospitals to function without proper fire safety clearance.

In Odisha heatwaves returned on saturday, at least 10 places recorded temperatures above 40°C. India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its recent report said that weather has been dry over Odisha. The maximum temperatures considerably rise over 'North Odisha' and no large change over rest of the state was observed. There is no rainfall in the state during last 24 hours, IMD said and today forecast rain and thunder showers. Hirakud was recorded 43.3°C which is highest in the state, Sambalpur recorded at 42.5°C, Jharsuguda 42.4°C, Bhawanipatna and Bolangir at 42.2 °C, Titlagarh  recorded 41.5°C, Talcher, Dhenkanal and Baripada at 40.4°C.

State capital Bhubaneswar recorded 37.9°C lower than yesterday 38.2°C. Humidity in the city was as high as 92 %.

In Odisha Congress workers led by Suresh Routray (Senior Party Leader) showed black flags at Master Canteen when Suresh Prabhu Visited Bhubaneswar Railway Station on sunday to launch Google's free Wi-Fi service.  Sources said around 100 Congress workers entered the railway station shouting slogans. Odisha Police has arrested more than 15 congress workers and youth congress members while protesting Railway minister Suresh Prabhu's Visit to Odisha for shifting wagon factory from Kalahandi District. The decision of Shifting of wagon factory from Kalahandi to Vizag, Andhra Pradesh has been catchted a political strom in the state. This month congress and other organisations called bundh in Kalahandi, which forced Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to write letter to Suresh Prabhu. Yesterday, Suresh Prabhu announced that a Joint Verification Group (JVG) will be formed jointly by Railway Ministry and Odisha government to verify the feasibility of establishment of Wagon Factory in Kalahandi and Ganjam District.

Venkaiah Naidu (Union Urban Development Minister)  on Thursday announced the names of the first 20 cities in India, selected to be developed as smart cities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, with Bhubaneswar in top list followed by Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Davanagere, Indore, New Delhi Municipal Council, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belagavi, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal are on the list.


Smart cities are projected to be equipped with basic infrastructure and will offer a good quality of life to the people through smart solutions. Assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, robust IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation along with safety of its citizens are some of the likely attributes of these smart cities.

The announcement of the first 20 cities will be followed by inclusion of 40 and 38 cities, respectively, over the next two years.
₹50 Crs from govt

Investments:
1-The government will invest Rs 50,802 crore in the 20 cities and towns over five years.

2-Venkaiah pointed out that the top 20 cities have proposed to retrofit certain specific areas to be smart. Bhubaneshwar will retrofit 985 acres around its railway station.
