By Accusing DMK leader M. Karunanidhi for giving incorrect instruction on the Cauvery water dispute, AIADMK MP S.R. Balasubramoniyan on putative that Tamil Nadu has suffered a massive loss because Karunanidhi rejected the then Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraj offer to give 265 tmc ft of Cauvery water to its lower riparian neighbour. By Recalling Mr. Karunanidhi squabble that as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had withdrawn the case against Karnataka in the Supreme Court on the advice of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1972, Balasubramoniyan stated that the DMK leader had conveniently quell the promise made by Devaraj. Subsequent the talks between the two States due to the intervention of Indra Gandhi led to Devraj making the promise, adding that but Karunanidhi refused to accept the offer. The AIADMK MP said the case was resuscitate only in 1983 after the Cauvery Irrigation Farmers Welfare Association filed a petition in the Supreme Court pursue a direction to constitute the Cauvery Tribunal. The State government also imp-leaded itself in the case. The tribunal in its interim order, awarded 205 tmc ft water to Tamil Nadu. But Karnataka refused to implement it, MP Said.

In a Respite for Karnataka, the Krishna Water Arguments Court-II, headed by Justice Brijesh Kumar, on Wednesday rejected the taking a court case to a higher court for review of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to give out things in a different way Krishna water among all the four related states. The court ruled that the water will be given in a different way between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh since the argument is kept to/restricted to only these states. The much-awaited legal decision has come as a big relief for Karnataka and Maharashtra, which had argued against change in who gets water based on the Reorganisation Act.  The court asked Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to submit their demur and arguments, if any, within four weeks and ended the hearing till December 14.


Telangana Advocate General Ramakrishna Reddy said to reporters in New Delhi that the court order is not final and subject to review by the Supreme Court. The two states had searched to get the river water among the four states quoting Section 89 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. Maharashtra and Karnataka had pointed that the Reorganization Act is limited to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Maharashtra and Karnataka were not parties to it.

Karnataka precipitate a constitutional crisis by taking a obstinate stand that it was unable to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as per the orders of the Supreme Court. Supreme Court has passed a fresh order on Friday asking the State Government to release 6,000 cusecs daily till October 6th or face the 'wrath of law'. A bench of Justices U U Lalit and Dipak Misra said, Karnataka should not be bent upon maintaining an stubborn stand of confrontation, for one knows not when the pique of law shall fall on one. During the hearing, Karnataka counsel Fali S Nariman handed over to the Supreme Court a letter written by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to him conveying that both Houses of the state legislature, all political parties and Union ministers were unanimous that the will of the people of Karnataka was against release of water.

According to the sources state government of Karnataka has decided to go against the Supreme Court's orders on the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu State. The order specifies that Karnataka to release 6,000 Cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu per day from September 21 to September 27. While it is wretched that a state government decided to ignore a judicial order, this also calls into question the role of the Supreme Court in the matter. The former secretary of the Union Ministry Ramaswamy S Iyer of Water Resources and an expert on the matter made the carping that Supreme Court was hearing the Cauvery dispute in the first place. According to Iyer, Article 262 in the Constitution is clear that the courts had no role to play in this matter and decisions would be taken by the Parliament.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had expressed his keenness to abandon on September 12th itself when Supreme Court ordered to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily till September 20th, according to the sources. Chief Minister was advised against any such political misfortune by the party high command. The message was reportedly communicated strongly by novice Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Oscar Fernandes. If Siddaramaiah assert on going with the people, he will have to expel the post citing moral grounds without making any adverse remarks on the order. Such a move could make him a hero and pay political dividends in battles ahead, according to the sources. But the party will have to elect a new Chief Minister and implement the order or caliper for imposition of President's rule, which could lead to upsurge of the crisis. 

It will also nourish Tamil Nadu's unvarying demand for initiate the Cauvery Management Board to take over control and manage the reservoirs in Cauvery basin. Any such misadventure will deal a big blow for Karnataka's long-term interests in the Cauvery dispute as the Special Leave Petition of Karnataka challenging the final award of Cauvery Tribunal is set to come up for hearing in SC on October 18, said Congress leaders who advocate a heedful approach in dealing with the critical point, at least till October 18.

An Old dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for sharing of River Cauvery water turned vicious between both on Monday, number of vehicles and property were damaged in both states. Curfew was imposed in 16 police station limits as tensions escalated. The violence began after the Supreme Court turned down in the morning Karnataka’s plea to temporarily stop the release of Cauvery river water to neighbouring State Tamil Nadu. City Police tried to contain horde burning vehicles and damaging shops in Bengaluru and other cities, while protesters in Tamil Nadu retaliated by targeting Kannadiga  people and businesses in their state. A Person was killed and another wounded in police firing when a mob tried to attack a patrol at Hegganahalli in Bengaluru city. More than 200 people were arrested so far.

Rioters set alight at least 30 buses bearing Tamil Nadu registered plates at a depot in Bengaluru while trucks were attacked in Mysore, Mandya, Dharwad and Chitradurga districts. Hotels and properties belonging to Tamils in Karnataka are being attacked and damaged. This is an alarming situation and is causing considerable anxiety, Chief Minister Of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa said.


On the streets passion ran high as Kannadiga groups targeted Tamil speakers. Crowds of people shouting slogans against the court order and Tamil Nadu marched along major roads in Bangalore, Mandya and Mysore. They forced shopkeepers to down shutters. Hundreds of policemen fanned across the Tamil-majority areas in Bengaluru, but struggled to contain the protests.
