Do you know everything about the next train you will catch? Or the next station you will visit? Here are 20 facts about the Indian Railways you might not be aware of.
Indian Railways – the lifeline of transport system in our country, is evidently a huge setup, and an organization with numerous branches. With a dedicated ministry and budget in its name, railways help large portions of the country’s population in running their daily businesses successfully. However, there are a few things you probably don’t know about our trains and how the entire system works. Read on, and maybe you can remember them; or simply be awed every-time you pass by something even remotely related to the railways.

1. Indian Railways is the largest railways network to be operated by a single government and is the world’s third largest network with a total length of 127,760 kms.

The annual tally is 8421 million passengers on 9991 trains connecting 7,172 stations across the country. The number of daily passengers on the railways is said to be larger than the population of some countries. It also carries 1014.15 million tons of freight annually.

2. Indian Railways owned the longest railway platform in the world at Kharagpur with a length of 2,733 feet. Now, breaking the record, Gorakhpur station has recently taken its place with a span of 4,430 feet.

3. Two historical railway elements are included in the UNESCO’ World Heritage site list – the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and the Indian Mountain Railways.

The Indian Mountain Railways includes three railways – the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways, Nilgiri Mountain Railways and Kalka Shimla Railway. All three trains have been functional for some 100 years. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a classic fusion of Gothic art with Indian architecture.

4. Indian Railways has five luxury trains.

These are:
  • Royal Rajasthan on Wheels,
  • Palace on Wheels (Rajasthan),
  • The Golden Chariot (Karnataka and Goa),
  • The Maharajas’ Express (begins in Delhi but the itinerary differs) and
  • The Deccan Odyssey (begins in Maharashtra but itinerary differs).
They are the pride of Indian Railways as they hold an eminent position among the luxury trains of the world. Palace on Wheels is the oldest one of them.

5. The Vivek Express (Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari) travels a distance of 4273 km, which is the longest run in the railways. The shortest run is taken by a few scheduled services between Nagpur and Ajni – a total of 3 kms.

6. Srirampur and Belapur are two different stations in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. They are both situated at the same point on the railway route, but are located on opposite sides of the track.

7. Mathura junction has the maximum number of routes emerging from it.

7 of them include – Broad Gauge (BG) line to Agra Cantt, BG line to Bharatpur, BG line to Alwar, BG line to Delhi, Metre Gauge (MG) line to Achnera, MG line to Vrindavan and MG line to Hathras.

8. The resonance frequency of the suspension for the coaches is kept as close as possible to 72 bpm or 1.2 Hz while designing.

The human body is most comfortable at 1.2 Hz frequency as it’s one of the most fundamental frequencies of our bodies (normal heartbeat) – which is why people sleep soundly in trains.

9. The railways functions on an operating ratio of 94%, that is, it spends 94 paisa on every rupee that it earns.

The amount of Rs. 4 saved from every Rs. 100 earned is minuscule and the revenues of the railways have been suffering because of the negligible revision of prices.

10. The diamond crossing (dubbed so by railways themselves), in Nagpur, is one-of-its-kind, from where trains go East, West, North and South.

11. The Indian Railways is constructing the world’s highest rail bridge over Chenab.

The bridge will be 1,315 meters long and will use up to 25,000 tonnes of steel. The idea was initially conceived in 2008 but the project was paused due to safety concerns. The work, however, began in 2010 and it is expected to be completed this year.

12. The longest tunnel in the country is Pir Panjal Railway tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir which is 11.25 kms long.

13. The busiest junction in the country is Howrah junction in Kolkata with as many as 974 trains stopping there daily.

14. All the electric appliances (fans, lights) in rail coaches function at 110 volts instead of the Indian standard 220 volts. It is a very effective counter-measure against thieves!cantt-railway-station-038

15. The mascot for Indian Railways is Bholu, or Bholu the guard elephant, which was designed by National Institute of Design. It was unveiled on 16th April 2002.

16. The oldest working Indian locomotive still in use is the Fairy Queen, which worked with a steam engine.

It was built in 1855. After retiring in 1909, it was relaunched in 1997 and operates as a tourist train between Delhi and Alwar. It travels at a speed 40 km/h.

Armstrong Pame, young Naga IAS officer has initiated a project of building a 100 km road in the remotest area of this village without the help of government funding. The amount of Rs. 101 Cr was sanctioned by the center in 1982 but the project never took off due to unknown reasons, despite after several follow ups and promises. But as it is said, necessity is the mother of invention. There was an outbreak of tropical diseases in the area and in the absence of motorable roads the patients could not reach the hospitals and lost their lives. Most of the doctors were also not ready to visit the place to treat the patients. In such a situation, Armstrong Pame reached out in his friend circle and arranged the doctors who camped themselves in the village to treat more than 500 patients.

His determination became even stronger and he decided to build a road with the help of his family and villagers, without taking any aid from the government. The family members, who have been struggling since six decades in this remote village, agreed to support him. A sum of Rs. 4 Lac was arranged from his retired school teacher father’s one month pension, his brother’s and sister in law’s one month salary each, his younger brother’s entire first salary and Pame’s five months’ salary. The amount was sufficient to kick start the project but more money was still required. The facebook was used as a rescue tool in that situation. A page was created, seeking donations and the overwhelming response was received from all over the world and contributed Rs. 1.2 Lakh.

The villagers made their signification contributions based on their capabilities by providing food and accommodation to the workers, by supplying fuel for the earthmovers and also being a part of manpower for the project. The donation centers have been set up in Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Shillong and Dimapur and NRIs from Canada, USA and the UK have been sending their contributions for the project named as Tamenglong-Haflong Road. As a token of thanks and appreciation for the support received from world wide, a monolith will be erected on the completion of the road with the name of all donors.

Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh while speaking at a conference Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial  Development (CRRID), said that country must aspire to achieve the target of spending 6 % of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on education through public finance and social divisions can be overcome by an educated society equip with good values based on liberty, equality and kinship. Mr. Singh foreground the needs for better education system, which can be supported with preferable infrastructures in the Government schools and universally accepted secular education. In the addressing Mr. Sing said, by promulgate universally accepted secular education, individuals can be accredit with good human values that will entitle them to bestow in building a socially and culturally harmonious society. 

The religious, caste and class divisions can be easily overcome by an educated society endue with values based on equality, liberty and fraternity. Mr. Singh also interpose that the current tendency to create a social division to overcome the values disseminate are based on those of the independence grapple and the idea of the nation. Mr. Singh was reported said that inequality is constantly increasing and according to a survey report, 74.5% of households lived with a monthly income of below INR  5,000 in 2011. Mr. Singh prioritize that there is a need to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education from 24.3% in 2014-15. He also added that 67% of total enrollment in the country is the result of Private colleges, both aided and unaided. Highlighting the need to resolve the issue at the root level, Mr. Singh deploy down few figures, which are seemed like a comment on the quality of education. He said that 52% of students in the class of fifth standard are not able to read argot text and 74% not able to perform division of simple sums of arithmetic. Also said that dropout rates are high amongst the rural students.

 Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane extended their fourth-wicket partnership to 358 as New Zealand endured their second successive wicketless session of the Indore Test. At lunch on day two, India were 458 for 3, with Kohli batting on 207* and Rahane on 124*.

Kohli carried on batting with the same understated authority he had displayed on day one, scoring 46 runs off 80 balls and only once getting in any trouble, when he went back to defend a Jeetan Patel delivery that kept low: the ball hit the toe-end of his bat, then the ground, and then bounced over the stumps. Otherwise, he was imperturbable, hitting five fours in the morning - the pick of them a straight drive off Henry, getting his head on top of the ball and using his wrists to place it between the bowler and mid-on - and giving New Zealand no sight of a way past him.

All the drama came at the other end, where the fast bowlers, as they had done through day one, peppered Rahane with the short ball, looking to exploit the uncertain pace and bounce of the Holkar Stadium pitch to plant indecision in the batsman's head.

Rahane ducked under the first one he faced in the morning, against Henry, and pulled the next one, at the start of his next over, to the square-leg boundary, closing his eyes momentarily but rolling his wrists nicely over the head-high ball to keep it down. Then, two balls later, Henry went around the wicket. Rahane swayed away to account for the angle across him, but it jagged back in off the pitch, followed him, and hit the side of his helmet, just over his ear.


A session where runs flowed and records broke. It started off with both batsmen taking on the bowling and playing some good positive cricket. First, came the record fourth wicket partnership against New Zealand for India, then Rahane's highest Test score and finally to top of the session, Kohli brought up his double hundred. New Zealand are just going through the motions and are waiting for the declaration. Williamson tried to keep them upbeat during the drinks break, but not sure how much that has helped. He will need another pep talk with his men for another long session awaits them. As for India, will they declare today once Rahane reaches his double ton? Or even before that? A South Indian derby it is for the IPL 2016 final, after the Sunrisers Hyderabad,  got the better of the Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 in Delhi on Friday. RCB vs SRH promises to be an absolute cracker, a match that should give us plenty of runs – when is that not the case when RCB play, and you add Warner to the mix, it is almost guaranteed – and give the fans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru plenty to cheer about.

batsmen –Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers -- look near unbeatable and on top of that they will be playing at their home ground, with 30,000-40,000 fans waving red flags and cheering their team on from ball one to ball 240.

The way RCB are playing at the moment – and their bowling hasn't been too shoddy either – they are the big favourites to lift their maiden IPL title, but in Warner, SRH have a batsman capable of single-handedly winning them a match, much like he did against GL.

But, the Sunrisers cannot bank on their captain alone to dig them out of a hole again. If there ever was a platform to showcase your skills, the IPL final is it.

Yuvraj Singh should be pumped up to play against his former team, and with the small dimensions of the Chinnaswamy, the stage is perfectly setup for a six-hitting masterclass from the left-hander.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claims it has new documents to prove that Prime Minister Narendra Modi lied about graduating from the Delhi University and that a degree published by newspapers recently is "fake". The ruling BJP has said that the allegations are "too silly to respond to."
Yesterday, Arvind Kejriwal wrote to the Delhi University urging it to put up details of PM Modi's degree on its website for the public and make sure that the degree documents were "safe".

His party AAP alleges that such documents don't actually exist, that no "Narendra Damodar Modi" passed out of the university in 1978 as the PM had professed in his 2014 poll papers.



 The degree certificate published in some newspapers is 'fake', alleges AAP.

AAP says it has tracked down the degree certificate of a "Narendra Mahavir Modi" who passed out on the date of PM Modi's graduation.

"Narendra Mahavir Modi", says AAP, is from Alwar in Rajasthan. PM Modi, however, is from Vadnagar in Gujarat, the party says, citing his school certificates.

The Prime Minister's Office has not responded to AAP and Mr Kejriwal's attacks. In his declaration while contesting the 2014 national election, Mr Modi had said that he has a bachelor's degree from the Delhi University in 1978 and an MA degree from the Gujarat University in 1983. It tied in with a 15-year-old TV interview in which he said that he quit school when he left home at 17 and pursued his degrees much later at the insistence of his mentors in RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Treating Arvind Kejriwal's demand for details of the prime minister's education as an RTI inquiry, the Central Information Commission last week directed the Delhi University and Gujarat University to provide details. The Gujarat University has said Mr Modi did complete his masters and scored 62.3 per cent as an external student. The Delhi University has not given any details till now.

With the probe into the VVIP chopper scam focusing on bribes allegedly paid to Indians, the CBI has found two "suspicious" remittances in 2009 to the accounts of former IAF chief SP Tyagi, who had retired in 2007.

The agency is also learnt to have found that Tyagi is owner/shareholder in at least five companies. Top officials told TOI that the "body of evidence" is now focused on 'bribery', which is mentioned in the April 7 Italian court judgment.
"The statement given by S P Tyagi in 2013 to us is being matched with the facts highlighted in the judgment and there are many discrepancies in what he told us then and now," a senior CBI officer said.

Efforts to reach Tyagi for his comments on the issue were unsuccessful. In another development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is learnt to have checked the CCTV footage of a five-star hotel in central Delhi, where main middlemen Christian Michel largely stayed during his travels to India. Michel travelled to India about 100 times since 1993.

Apart from the hotel's CCTV footage and records to identify who all Michel met when the AgustaWestland contract was being discussed in the IAF and the defence ministry, the ED is also trying to ascertain the addresses Michel regularly visited in Delhi and NCR. His driver Narayan Bahadur is learnt to have told ED about his meeting places, including a farmhouse in south Delhi.
Investigators suspect that some 170 companies were formed in different countries by the alleged middlemen and accused persons to route the money to India. Three of Michel's companies alone are under the scanner.

It is also learnt that Michel paid for the foreign trips and luxury stays of two retired IAF officers. These two retired officials were questioned by the ED in 2014. The ED filed a criminal case last year under provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act in connection with alleged paybacks in the chopper deal which was cancelled by the government.

Meanwhile, an ED team is likely to visit Singapore soon. One of the companies used to transfer bribe funds in the web of companies was reportedly based in Singapore. A letter rogatory was sent there apart from 10 other countries, including Italy, Tunisia, Mauritius, the UK, British Virgin Islands and the UAE.

Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission(HRC) has issued a notice to Apparao Podile, Hyderabad who is being investigated in the case filed over the death of Rohith Vemula. A Complaint was filed by Namrata Jaiswal and Ramu Goud of the Telangana AAP. AAP has approached the commission when the non-teaching staff began to protest the vandalism of university property by boycotting their duties.
They said that the UoH authorities had closed all the hostel messes, which affected over 5,000 students, leaving them with no water and food. They wrote that the varsity administration also barred media from entering the institution’s premises and cut of Internet connectivity.
The main complaint of the AAP members: 

  • The University of Hyderabad authorities have shut down the messes which is affecting over 5000 students. No food and water too.
  • The UoH authorities are not allowing media inside the campus. All the above violations are leading to great suffering and blatant violation of human rights.
  • The authorities even cut down internet connections for the students and the faculty.

Ind-Ra (India Ratings and Research) expects the current account deficit (CAD) to come in close to 1.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in FY-16. On March-21st Reserve Bank of India(RBI) data showed, CAD narrowed to 1.3% of GDP in third quarter of the fiscal as against 1.5% in the same period last year, mainly on account of lower trade deficit. A lower CAD in 3rd Quarter FY-16 was mainly due to a lower trade deficit of $34.0 billion than $37.4 billion in 2nd Quater FY-16. Despite a moderation in net invisible receipts, CAD on a cumulative basis narrowed to 1.4% of GDP during April to December 2015 from 1.7% in the corresponding period a year ago. Net invisible receipts moderated to $26.9 billion in 3QFY16 from $28.7 billion in 2QFY16 led by services receipts and private transfers, said Ind-Ra report.

 The Custom officials on Sunday seized 146 tortoises from Nepal citizen at the Mumbai airport. The incident happened when the Jet Airways staff brought one left behind baggage to officers of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), saying that some suspicious images had been noticed by GVK Security. This bag was said to belong to a transit passenger, who arrived from Madagascar and flew to Kathmandu leaving this bag behind. Officers of Air Intelligence Unit examined the bag and recovered and seized 146 tortoises. Out of the 146 tortoises, 139 were Radiated tortoises (Astrochelys radiata) and seven were Angonoka tortoises (Astrochelys yniphora), both critically endangered tortoise species of Madagascar. Two radiated tortoises were found dead with broken shell. Since these were exotic species and cannot be introduced into India and because of quarantine reasons, as informed by wild life authorities, the airlines have been instructed to re-export the same to Madagascar under intimation to wildlife authorities there.

Although the social media giant witnessed a sharp increase in live streaming since it opened its “Live Video” feature earlier this year, some of the users reported problems of constantly being bugged by notifications of live streaming videos by Pages they have “Liked”.

That is good for the Page owners but users have no way to turn off notifications when a company or friend starts to broadcast.

According to Facebook, the users will not be inundated with the alerts by default for much longer as the ability to turn off Live Video notifications is on the way “soon”, the tech website Engadget reported.

“We have heard from people that they don’t want to miss live videos from the people or Pages they care about, so we may send a notification if someone you’ve recently interacted with is going live, in case you want to tune in,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“However, we know people want more control over the live notifications they receive, so we’re working on improving this experience. We are starting to roll out a new setting that lets people turn off all live notifications, through their Notifications settings, that will be available to all people soon,” the spokesperson added.

Instead of the notification bar, the Live videos will sit atop the News Feed.

For turning this feature on, the user can click the “Live Subscribe” button on a video and turn off the notifications.

However, this only works for that page whereas the update will allow you to turn off the alerts for all Live Videos.

Playing down the hype over the potentially high-voltage India-Pakistan World T20 match to be played here on March 19, World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir said on Saturday that the team's focus should be on winning the title.

This is all created by media to get TRPs and stuff like that. It's not 'the' match. The bigger thing is that whoever is playing in the World Cup will look to win the trophy. India-Pakistan is just another match," Gambhir, a member of India's 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup winning teams, said at an interactive session at the Calcutta Club today.

People make it a hype but if you ask any sportsman they don't see it's 'the' game. The bigger aim is to win the World Cup.

He further said that the job would be tougher for India from a 'Group of death' also featuring Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand.

It will be pretty tough for India with the kind of group they're in. Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan are always very unpredictable. They need really have to get their A team forward if they want to go all the way."

I am being hunted down by media in UK. Sadly they did not look in the obvious place. I will not speak to media so don't waste your efforts, Mallya's said in his tweet early on Sunday morning.

The Enforcement Directorate recently registered a money laundering case against Mallya and others based on an FIR lodged by the CBI last year. The CBI had registered a case against Mallya, Kingfisher Airlines, its chief financial officer A Raghunathan, and unknown officials of IDBI Bank in its FIR alleging that the Rs 900 crore loan sanctioned by the bank was in violation of norms regarding credit limits.

The ED had also issued summons to over half a dozen officials of the IDBI bank, one of the lenders, and Kingfisher Airlines under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) wherein all the individuals have been asked to submit details about their personal finances and Income Tax Returns (ITRs) of last five years to the investigators.

Vijay Mallya, the chief of now defunct Kingfisher Airlines which owes thousands of crores to banks in loans, has tweeted to say that he is being "hunted down by media in UK" but he will not speak.

India and Mexico have discussed ways to enhance co-operation in key areas of trade and energy with Sushma Swaraj (External Affairs Minister) inviting Mexican participation in Govt innovative programmes like 'Make in India' and 'Digital India. Swaraj and her Mexican counterpart Claudia Ruiz Massieu Salinas also talked about ways and means of elevating the special relationship between the two countries and agreed to schedule the next meeting of the Joint Commission in Mexico in the second half of 2016. The visiting dignitary had called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday. Swaraj mentioned that India would like Mexico s participation in ensuring value addition and greater use of technology in our agriculture and agro-processing sectors. The External Affairs Minister also conveyed government's interest in providing launch facilities for Mexican micro and nano satellites. The Mexican Foreign Minister renewed the invitation extended by the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto for Modi to visit Mexico in the near future.

A team of 27 member Pakistan cricket contingent left for India to take part in the Twenty20 world Cup, finally ending days of uncertainty over their participation in the mega event. The team will be reaching Kolkata via Abu Dhabi. The Pakistan squad including 15 players, 12 officials and support staff reached the Allama Iqbal international airport amidst tight security and boarded a flight hours after the Pakistan government finally gave the PCB the green signal to fly to India to take part in the ICC event. Due to a long stay in Abu Dhabi the squad will reach Kolkata later this evening.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said as the world becomes extremely difficult and challenging, India should keep the reform momentum going while putting resources in areas where there are lack. Speaking at the opening day of the three day India-IMF Conference, Advancing Asia Investing for the Future he hoped to get through some important measures over the next few months for growth oriented policies. We have been trying to do our best as far as India is concerned, not withstanding the global environment being extremely difficult and challenging. 
The challenge before India is to keep the reform momentum on one hand and take the best advantage of areas where we are doing reasonably well and then putting a large part of our national resource in areas where we are lacking. Agriculture, infrastructure creation, emerging private sector, improving health of banks are the challenges the government faces, he said. In that realistic analysis, we are attempting to address each one of these challenges. Jaitley hoped that India would continue to grow at a slightly more improved pace in 2016-17 and continue to retain its position as fastest growing major economy in the world.
