According to the Bhutan the area belongs to the tiny Himalayan kingdom; India endorses that stand. China says India is using the road-building to cross over their border. Solders from the two sides have oppose each other close to a valley controlled by China that separates India from Bhutan and gives China access to the so-called Chicken's Neck (a thin strip of land that connects mainland India to its seven northeastern states). India has said it had warned China that construction of road near their common border would have serious security implications.

Using the 'same logic' Chinese experts argued that third country's Army could enter Kashmir at Pakistan's request, as the Indian Army stopped the Chinese military from constructing a road in the Doklam area in the Sikkim sector on behalf of Bhutan.

India and China have been active in a standoff in the Doklam area, tri-junction of India, Bhutan and China, from the past three weeks after a Chinese Army's construction party attempted to build a road. The Indian name for the region was Doka La which the Bhutan recognises as Doklam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.

The China's state-run media had declared that India should either withdraw its troops 'with glory or be kicked out', the state-run 'Global Times' said in an editorial that India will assault 'greater losses' than 1962 war if it 'provoke' border tussle with China. The paper also added that the India should taught a bitter lesson. We believe the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is powerful enough to expel Indian troops out of Chinese territory. The stand-off began on June 6th on a mesa next to Sikkim. China claims that Indian troops crossed into China's Donglang region (Doka La is the Indian name for the region) and blocked work on the road on plateau. India said that the road is a serious security concern and the area which the China is claiming as its own is disputed by Bhutan as its territory. Bhutan has given the diplomatic and military support by India. Strategically, the remote area that is now hosting the tension is key because it is the narrow sliver of land that connects India's seven northeastern states to the rest of the country - the region is called the 'chicken's neck'. Bhutan is often overlooked by the international community. The small nation lies deep within the Himalayas between China and India, two of the most populated countries in the world.

But the country of about 750,000 people has set some impressive environmental benchmarks. As we’ve written about in the past, Bhutan is not merely carbon neutral, it’s also a carbon sink—making it one of the few countries in the world to have negative carbon emissions.

This means the country’s carbon sinks, such as its forests, absorb more carbon dioxide each year than its sources of pollution, such as factories, emit.

“According to recent figures, the country emits around 1.5 million tonnes of carbon annually, while its forests absorb over 6 million tonnes,” Proudly Carbon Neutral said.

To boot, Bhutan is aiming for zero net greenhouse gas emissions, zero-waste by 2030 and to grow 100 percent organic food by 2020. The Himalayan nation is currently 72 percent forested and the constitution requires that no less than 60 percent of it remains forested. It has even banned export logging.

Trees hold special value in Buddhism, the nation’s dominant religion. Last June, a team of 100 volunteers set a world record for planting 49,672 trees in just one hour. And earlier this month, to celebrate the birth of the first child of King Khesar and Queen Jetson, all 82,000 households in Bhutan planted a tree, while volunteers planted another 26,000 in various districts around the country, for a total of 108,000 trees.

Bhutan also refuses to judge its success on Gross Domestic Product, instead using an index that measures Gross National Happiness.

Why Indians should visit Bhutan, world’s first and only carbon negative country !

With India’s capital Delhi being among the top cities in the world for being the most polluted, Bhutan is the complete opposite. The country is world’s first and only one that is a carbon-negative country. It means it absorbs more carbon than it emits it making its air so very pure. Imagine what breathing this air even for a few days can do your mind and body.
